The hotel served as a steamboat stop in the early 1800's till the railroads were built. The B.S. Rhea, owned by the Ryman Line, frequented the hotel. The B.S. Rhea was named for B.S. Rhea, Esquire, the "Corn King of Tennessee." It originally ran the Nashville-Paducah trade for the upper Cumberland.

Built by Abraham Boyd between 1798 and 1804, the old hotel served as part of a hustling and bustling city. The hotel established the Canton area and was there prior to Trigg County's existence. In it's inception, this town was larger in it's growth than Nashville, Tennessee.
